why cant i listen to music in-game?

i press the xbox button and try to play a song from an external hdd i have connected to the 360 but it sais it cant read music from anything other than the xbox 360 hdd while in game. i cant copy data from my external hdd to the 360 and the 360 doesnt detect my ipod touch. i have olenty of friends who connect their phones to the 360 and listen to the songs stored on it in-game why cant i do it with my 360?i have an elite with an empty 120gb hdd because the 360 cant copy from the hddit wont play anything from an external hdd, ipod, or streaming from my laptop while in game. whats wrong? i can listen to music from my laptop and hdd while in the main menu why cant i listen to music in-game?
If you have a flash drive you can import songs from the computer using that, but the music comes out of the TV and not headphones if you use them which is pointless. I'm pretty sure I've selected output as headphones only and still the music player only outputs through tv speakers. Anyone confirm or deny this? why cant i listen to music in-game?

I don't know what to say. I haven't tried it in a long time, so maybe they patched it, but I've used an external HDD to listen to music in games before.
Ya you have to copy them to your harddrive first unless you play a CD, thats what the error is saying. I don't think you can ''stream'' music from mobile sources, I have an elite too and I can't stream. And you said your hdd is empty b/c it can't copy from old 360? there are transfer kits for that.
